CHARRICK
KELTIC
FARM

Our Farm

Charrick Keltic Farm is located on a hill over looking the North Sydney harbour.
The daily trips of Newfoundland ferry boats can be observed from the property.
This farm has been the site of traditional mixed farming for many years.
The diaries kept by previous owners (Bill and Helen MacKeigan) over a period
of fifty years reveal a very productive farmstead that frequently extended its
hospitality to friends and neighbours.

Charles MacDonald purchased the farm 25 years ago
and has raised sheep, donkeys, hens and cattle.

Presently the farm animals consist of purebred Highland
Cattle, Berkshire Pigs, Donkeys and Free Range Hens.

Our Herd

Eleven years ago, Charles, Sharon and son, Rick, decided
to purchase Highland cattle, a breed particularly well-suited
to the Cape Breton climate.

They acquired ten breeding cows and a stock bull,
who thrived and multiplied in their new surroundings

The owners focused on careful grazing management of lush,
diverse pastures and winter feeding with nutrient rich hay and
silage.

They are dedicated to the vigor of their purebred Highland
fold and to the production of quality, additive-free beef.

Currently, Charrick Keltic Farm has a fold of 60 purebred Highlands.
The animals graze on pastures which contain no synthetic fertilizers .

Our Products

Charrick Keltic Farm produces purebred Highland breeding stock which is available for sale
to local and Maritime breeders. It is also a farmgate operation producing natural beef.
Advance orders can be placed by the customer and be picked up later at the farm.

Our beef is government inspected, custom cut and fresh frozen.

Customers thoroughly enjoy the wholesome flavour of our lean natural beef which is grass and legume fed, and is finished on grass, barley and apples. It contains no chemical additives such as hormones, antibiotics or pesticides.

To counteract illness, several of our customers have switched to additive-free foods, having learned the immense health benefits to be gained from "awareness priority" as opposed to "convenience" foods.

As Charrick Highland fold prospers and multiplies in its natural setting, we see community vitality grow through participation in local food exchange. Our family is pleased to be contributing to the improved health of the community and of the environment.
